We promised you more photos from our 20th Anniversary dinner and here they
are! The tables were decorated with all things glittery to suit the “Sunday
Night Fever” theme. Ladies dressed in their bell-bottoms, retro print
dresses and mini-skirts were seen having a fantastic time mingling over
dinner, wine and cocktails but when the music started, they got down to
business. They boogied to songs from the seventies and danced their hearts
out for a chance to win the “Disco Queen” title. See if you can put a name
to the faces of those on the dance floor!

My Unforgettable 20-year Journey with VITAL YEARS by Anna Mak

My journey with Vital Years began upon my retirement from the corporate world towards the end of 1996. That same year on the 1st of April Vital Years was birthed right in the heart of boomtown Damansara Jaya. Indeed, the years have slipped by all too quickly. I can hardly believe it myself to know that the babe has now turned twenty!

Damansara Jaya Centre was where my journey began. The work environment was totally different from what I was used to in the office. It was a relief to me that I could walk in my bare feet on carpeted floor.

There I was amidst young children, teaching them, telling them stories and having fun with them through singing and action-oriented activities. I realized that the experience to work with young children could be satisfying. Sadly, I had to deal with the pain in my lower back which resulted from sitting on the little wooden chairs. I felt it would be best for me to leave so my back can be spared of the pain.

So I voiced out my decision to leave which I did not eventually. That was because I was touched by the love and concern shown to me. Cushions were sewn to fit the little wooden chairs and they were sewn by none other than the late mother of Mrs. Lam. It was a relief to have cushioned chairs to sit on.

Then some months later, I had “a little chat ”over a cuppa with the author and founder Mrs. Lam Kam Foong and Junie Leow the manager. It was in that chat that Mrs. Lam shared her vision:
“to make every child a literate child and to instil in each child the love for reading”.
That profound statement boggled my mind. Though I could not quite figure out how that vision can be realized, I felt I wanted to play a part in the work to make this vision a reality.

So I treaded on.

In the days that followed, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction seeing how children could read with ease although they were non-readers at the start. Though the cushions helped to some extent my back still ached from sitting on the chairs for too long while teaching. But the pain was soon forgotten when it was time to swing into actions with the children, re-enacting fairy tales, singing songs and rhymes which I don’t remember doing while I was a child. Those activities made me feel young all over again! I humbly say that I still enjoy carrying out these activities with the children. It’s really fun, fun, fun!

As the days went by, the vision of Mrs. Lam made more and more sense to me as I watched children read day by day. Work was not just work, but precious time invested in the lives of young children. The reward was truly satisfying.
Recalling the “little chat” with Mrs. Lam and Junie Leow, a sense of gratitude rise up from within me acknowledging that if it was not for that day I would not have continued with this journey. I would not be able to envisage the Vision which boggled my mind in the early days. I congratulate you, dear Mrs. Lam for the immense success of your programme and for your passion to raise the standard of English Literacy in Malaysia and the neighbouring coutries.

Work turned from micro to macro with the inception of Vital Years as a Franchised business in 1999. There were opportunities galore for me to meet people from all walks of life as they embarked on the business. The experience I had and challenges faced while working with franchisees in different parts of the country are what I would count as blessings to me.
Over the years many have become friends, some of whom are dear to me. Their words of appreciation and encouragement, their warm hugs will always remain in my heart.

However, my journey was not a bed of roses. There were hiccups along the way – disappointments, disillusionment, shattered hopes and tears of sorrow.
YES! Those were the days when I felt like the world was crashing down on me.

Often, I was reminded of the proverb “Every cloud has a silver lining” and what I needed to do was to look for that silver lining. This proverb has always been a source of encouragement to me. The words in the song: Look for the silver lining ………‘A heart full of joy and gladness will always banish sadness and strife’ helped me look at the positive side of things.

One by one dark clouds slipped away. Looking back, those dark clouds were like a drop in the ocean compared to the joyful days in the classroom with the children and the teachers. Those were the sunny days when I felt loved and appreciated. Happy days were here again.

Twenty years have slipped by all too quickly. In retrospect, I would say that my journey is well-travelled- one that I would want to remember and to treasure.

Twenty years have slipped by all too quickly. In retrospect, I would say that the years have been most fulfilling for me, having helped hundreds of children embrace English literacy. I would consider my journey well-travelled, one that I would want to remember and to treasure.

May Vital Years continue to spread her wings, reaching out to children far and near. May the Vision of Mrs. Lam continue to warm the heart and soul of all those who have placed their trust and confidence in the Programme.
May I give thanks to God who has seen me through all these years, without whose blessings, I would not be able to witness the twentieth birthday of Vital Years.

Pip! Pip! Hooray for Vital Years!
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING
When ‘er a cloud appears in the blue
Remember somewhere the sun is shining
And so the right thing to do
Is make it shine for you
A heart full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life.

RUNNING THE VITAL YEARS ISPEAK SERIES by MS YAP (LAGENDA HEIGHTS)

It is exactly a year since we first started the iSpeak series in April 2015. In Legenda Heights, we run the programme twice a day – morning & afternoon and on Thursday we run it thrice a day – morning, afternoon & evening.

Both the iSpeak programme and the usual Smart Board lessons are especially designed by VITAL YEARS. However, the iSpeak lessons are a little different because they are based on the Core Materials of the VITAL YEARS programme. The children are familiar with the words and topics; and are also able to listen and understand the audio better because most of the demonstrations are done by our Founder and members of the Programme Department, compared to the normal smart board lessons where most of the oral component is done by foreigners.

As we have observed over the past year, children listen and grasp the ideas better and have acquired better speaking skills. The iSpeak programme allows better participation and helps to develop the children’s confidence. Some of them have even begun to use global English when reading and speaking. They have shown improvements in the use of proper word stress, better intonation and pacing of speech.

We do give small tokens to encourage the children when they speak well and are willing to try.

To speak in global English is indeed a challenge to the facilitators. We are making an effort to prepare and equip ourselves with the necessary skills in order to lead the children. We practice reading the Core Books following the audio CD at least 3 times a week and this has helped us to better appreciate the text. We also take a few minutes in a day to carry out the suggested activities i.e. talk about our favourite food, colour, hobby, interesting places, collections etc, which has helped to evoke the slumbering passion in us. The regular activities and positive impact on the children has further motivated the facilitators to go the extra mile in preparing themselves for the lessons. Some are going all out with their creativity and props to make the session more interesting and to better capture the children’s attention.

Apart from the desired outcome, we do get other bonuses from our regular conversation among facilitators – we are closer and understand each other better now. What a surprise!

The regional Franchise Meeting took place at the VITAL YEARS Usahawan Kepong branch on Sunday, August 21. It was a good opportunity for the Franchisees to meet with the Franchisor to discuss the steps moving forwards business-wise; as well as to get a glimpse of what’s in store in the up-coming Holiday Workshop in November. A short workshop was conducted to reiterate the importance of speaking well too.

We also had two franchisees; Ms Celine Seen from VITAL YEARS Seremban 2 and Ms Ann Lai from VITAL YEARS Ipoh to share their experiences with us. They reminded us that it is important to build a strong relationship not only with the parents but also with the children and teachers too. Ms Celine Seen also mentioned that it is important to comply with the standards set out by the Franchisor in order to maintain the quality. It certainly was a morning well spent for everyone present.

The VITAL YEARS Annual Conference 2016 was held in Taiping, the town of “Everlasting Peace”, on Sunday, March 19. Taiping is also the birthplace of the founder of the VITAL YEARS Programme, Mrs Lam Kam Foong. Therefore, it was a very nostalgic and special time to gather together for the conference in this iconic town.

In her keynote address, Mrs Lam highlighted the importance of embracing this journey of passing on this gift of literacy, and to make it our own. It was a reminder that we will reap the benefits when we inject our best efforts, our love and passion in what we do.

So let us look to the future with hope and strive for a brighter tomorrow as a family in VITAL YEARS!

VITAL YEARS SUBANG SS15’s “MINI”- ADVENTURE

On a beautiful Sunday of 12th March 2017. Vital Years SS15 organized an outing to Malaysia’s First and Largest Indoor Miniature and Train Exhibition which is located at the shopping complex in The Summit USJ.

On our arrival, we were welcomed by The MinNature’s staff at the entrance. A group photograph of the participants was taken and later given to all our students who attended the outing. Light snacks and refreshments were served.

The students had the opportunity to see and feel hundreds of beautifully handcrafted miniature dioramas and many other spectacular miniatures of Kuala Lumpur monumental and historical buildings. The sight of the miniatures made them felt like ‘Alice in Wonderland! It was awesome. They even ignited a volvano with the touch button. ‘Wow! Wow! Smoke’! Smoke! exclaimed the children excitedly. It was so realistic. The students had a terrific time exploring this beautiful and artistic mini wonderland. The tour was conducted in English. At the end of guided tour, the students learned about Malaysian culture and heritage. Really worthwhile for most of them.

The highlight of the outing was the hands-on workshop which allowed the children to develop their creativity and imaginations. It was mindboggling but challenging for them. The students made and painted their very own cottage. They decorated their cottage with little pebbles, grass and trees. The outing ended with a bang when the students presented us with their creations. The children were really talented and we were so impressed and proud with their creativity. We expressed our appreciation to The MinNature facilitators who were patient, helpful and attentive to their needs.

Everyone who participated in the outing had a jolly good time. It was truly an enjoyable and educational indoor activity for our students at The MinNature. The outing was definitely eye opening for all of us. It was a memorable outing.
